The Psalms and Enemies

The Old Testament Book of Psalms mentions the words “enemy” and “enemies” 104 times. That is quite amazing. Most Christians recognize the Book of Psalms as a source of comfort, rightfully so, but they fail to see the big picture. David had sinned horribly, stealing a man's wife, impregnating her and then murdering her husband to hide the sin.

David repented and God forgave him... 2nd Samuel 12:13, “And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.” However, some people hated David and spent the rest of their lives trying to destroy David, condemning him, stirring up strife and slandering him. Psalm 31:10-14 . . .

“For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing: my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are consumed. I was a reproach among all mine enemies, but especially among my neighbours, and a fear to mine acquaintance: they that did see me without fled from me. I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel. For I have heard the slander of many: fear was on every side: while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life. But I trusted in thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my God.”

As we just read, David's neighbors walked away from him when they saw him coming. It affected his health. David often grieved and sighed because of his enemies. Many self-righteous people slandered David, who said... “I have heard the slander of many.” They conspired against him. They even tried to take his life, all because of his past mistakes and failures in life. The truth is that they were very jealous of David, because he had done great works for God. A righteous man can do a thousand good works and remain unnoticed; but just let him mess up once, and self-righteous hypocrites will parade his sin, condemning him to a life of criticism and sinful slander.

The wonderful thing is that God has the final say, and it matters not what men may say. David had learned this truth, which is why he stated in Psalm 51:4, “Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight...” James 4:12 warns, “There is one Lawgiver, Who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?” God is the only Lawgiver and Judge. Keep these precious truths in mind as you read through all of the following Scriptures from the Book of Psalms which deal with enemies. God is still on His throne. May God bless you.
